We came across this cute little cafe/bakery after lunch at Colabo on Hengshan Lu. They have a few tables and an upstairs. Nice place to have a chat over coffee (or milk tea with pearls for me!)

Amokka Cafe
A fantastic space with a bar/cafe downstairs and large yet cozy sitting space on the second floor. It feels like a fancy dorm lounge in a way, with small tables and booths where people have meals, drinks, or just reading or typing away. One guy even had a full PC station set up (that remarkably collapsed down when he was done).
They have some good inexpensive wine options (few bottles under 200rmb) and the food is good. You can order pizza from the place down the street, as well as Thai from next door. We went with the antipasti sampler with salumi, cheeses, olives, etc.

La Paleta
Lovely bakery with Japanese-style breads and pastries (or in my mind they are Japanese-like, though with Chinese twist).
I don't know why, but my favorite right now is the charcoal bread with Gouda cheese -- it's a big dark grey brick with yellow chunks, so not the most appetizing site, but it's perfect amount of chewy and savory for me.
There is one by the Carrefour near Hongqiao and also one by my office at Hong Bao Shi Rd, which has a sit-down place with cute cafe options for lunch.

Wagas
Sandwich and coffee shop with 'California'-like paninis and salads, in addition to fresh juice and wine. They have plenty of small tables and booths, more trendy than homey, but a place that you can camp out and read/work for a while.
I had a "Greek" sandwich, falafel, roasted eggplant, tabouleh, on toasted ciabatta and a beetroot-pear juice, which not surprisingly is beet red. 75 rmb.
I went to the one in Hong Kong New World at Huai Hai Zhong Lu near Madang Lu (near Uniqlo), right in a little square with other restaurants and a block from my Shanghai apt!

sasha's
Sasha's is a lovely restaurant and bar located in a historic house on the corner of Dongping Lu and Hengshan Lu. Nice couch seating. Great bloody mary's and tea, that comes in clear pot and kept warm over candles. Yummy tomato, mozzarella and basil salad, and rest of menu looked quite good.http://www.smartshanghai.com/venue/1316/Sashas_shanghai

Cissi's Market
February 2009
We came across Cissi's when Jo spotted the enormous flourescent letters on top of the building that read WINE BAR. Turns out Cissi's is also a great gourmet market, bar, and cafe, with super nice people. We sat outside on the street with a bottle of wine, but the folks inside looked like they had some pretty amazing meals too. I'd go here a lot if I lived in Austin.

Via Sete
September 2008Via Sete is a cute lunch spot around the block from the H Stern museum and flagship shop – convenient for us post shopping since it was raining. Ended up being a great, light lunch, ‘light’ being the operative word – we were all craving salads and wraps by day five of our Rio trip. Had a really yummy meat carpaccio and greens wrap with a salad. Cariocas kind of drown their salads with dressing, but besides that quite good. Also had a nice glass of mate, a Brazilian tea-like drink that I like from Argentina.

Brunch with Lowell and Charles
The Grove Cafe has outposts around the city apparently, and there is another one on Fillmore. Charles took me and Lowell for brunch. I had Crab a la Dave, which was a wonderful crab cakes Benedict, with two poaches eggs and several slices of avocado. Had a yummy "small" hot chocolate about the size of my head.
I held back on the Bloody Mary this morning, but the other Grove has amazing ones, so I am labelling the Grove here as well.

Coupa Cafe

Tea and paper writing by myself
Coupa Cafe is my favorite Palo Alto coffeeshop. Their speciality is "finest mountain grown single estate coffees from Venezuela," but being a non-coffee drinker, I go there for the tea, dessert, and full menu of wonderful crepes, paninis and salads. Their herbal teas are great, they give you a full teapot and one of those gourmet tea bags for a few bucks. Mexican hot chocolate is another favorite of mine, I am not sure what the real name is but it is a spicy hot cocoa. Sounds weird, but really good kick.
Definitely worth going for food as well. They have great crepes of all kinds. Pesto chicken and the grilled eggplant ones are my favorites. I haven't had the dessert ones yet but those look yummy too. Breakfast foods are also great, as are the salads, paninis and pasta. I got warm pita and hummus to snack on while I wrote my paper. Beer and wine for the late night folks too, they are open 7 days from 7am-11pm.
One of the best things about this place is the free wi-fi. There is covered outdoor seating, small tables and booths inside, and to-go options. Totally a GSB hangout with people jamming away on their laptops. I also have done most of my Dartmouth alumni interviews here. Nice non-Starbucks atmosphere.

Brunch with Lowell, Carolyn and Mal
Grove is a wonderful little cafe on the corner of Chestnut and Avila (between Pierce and Scott). We met Carolyn and Mal for a noonish Sunday brunch. There are seats on the sidewalk outside as well as benches along a large window that looks out into the street. You have to get in line to order your food or drinks, but they bring them to you at your seat.
AWESOME Bloody Mary's, thick and spicy with garnishes of spicy peppers, olives and green beans. They also come in a glass that has to be a foot tall. The food was equally impressive in size -- the breakfast burrito looks like a baby seal -- and you can ask for additional ingredients like bacon or guacamole. Carolyn and Lowell had Dave's Downfall (I think) which is a eggs benedict with avocado. Sides of bacon, salad and 4-cheese mac & cheese were nice too. (We might have overeaten). Our neighbors had some good looking coffee drinks.
Cute brunch place with great Bloody Mary's. Parking is a pain but it is the Marina.
